Character name: Shiro
Canon: No Game No Life
Age: 11
Gender: Female

Abilities & skills: Shiro is, in all honesty, a normal little girl. Mostly. She lacks the level of physical endurance a normal human would have, but she makes up for that in her astounding levels of intelligence. Between her brother, Sora, and herself, Shiro would be considered the more logical of the two. Despite having quit school very early on, she is able retain academic knowledge beyond her grade level. In her own time, she has learned to speak many different languages fluently; the practicality behind this helps her in the long run when traveling to an island in a foreign region of the world. Aside from language, she has a better handle on mathematical equations and anything related to precise calculations. While these can be applied to real life, she has been able to use them within a different medium. Take, for example, a computer. She spends so much time on the internet and basically taught herself how to hack into websites. She does not use to too often, but she does remember how to get past firewalls and the like once she's actually at the computer.

Speaking of applying what she's learned, she has done much of that in the form of playing video games. In the gaming world, she makes up half of "Blank." Her brother is her partner, and they both cooperate beautifully when gaming against any present and future opponents. Shiro is considered Sora's equal in this sense – she can possibly even be better than him, but she likes the equality part more. Like Sora, she plays a variety of genres. Out of all of their available games, her skills are put to use in chess. That is where she uses logic, seeing the game as a complicated form of tic-tac-toe. She is also particularly sharp with First-Person Shooters. The latter of the two main games she frequents puts those calculations to work; everything from the angle of a shot, the intervals between shots fired, and the movement of her opponent can be calculated down to the last second – a feat which some may think is purely a form of precognition. But no, she is just a very smart kid. Unfortunately, she has more difficulty in games that deal with deceit and strategy. These are generally left for her brother to pick up on.

Personality: In contrast to her older brother, Sora, Shiro is the quieter of the two. Her reserved nature stems from her prodigy status; her intelligence along with her pale hair made her a social pariah among her peers, causing her to become a shut-in just like Sora. Thankfully, with her level of self-awareness, she isn't too impressionable at her age. While she may have picked up some of her brother's perverseness, she is still fairly innocent and smart for her own good. Although Shiro may not speak very much, she will speak whenever she feels the need to. And if she doesn't speak, she lets her actions do the talking for her.

Her brother is her everything. She admires him to the point where it appears to be a big brother complex. But she loves him as he is, dork and all. While he considers her his equal, she is fast to tease him about his need to become 'a fulfilled man' and calls him out on how harsh his bluntness is towards others. And aside from cooperating with him to form the infamous Blank, she is practically inseparable from him. Literally inseparable, more like – she will stick to him like glue. Being several feet away from one another brings on a ridiculous bout of separation anxiety for the both of them. If she stays away from Sora for longer than necessary, she goes into a catatonic state. If the separation gets any worst, her logical way of thinking is almost completely lost.

Speaking of anxiety, she rarely gets anxious while playing a game. Her manner here is cool, calm, rational. Sometimes she's even very brutal in the execution of her gaming style. If she finds herself in a rut, she starts chewing on her thumbnail while trying to compute her next move. Very rarely does she actually break down in the middle of a game, however; if it does come down to that, Shiro starts losing her cool.

While innocent, Shiro has been affected by humanity as much as Sora has. Her cynicism appears to be on the lighter side, fortunately, and she has the ability to see past most facades people wear on a daily basis. Outside of her brother's companionship, Shiro rarely speaks with others. Thanks to her peers, social trauma has stifled the need for social interaction. Being mistreated like that can mess up the trust process. She also doesn't appear that interested to speak or care about other people. Emotional states are confusing. Different. People have emotions and she often forgets that emotions are an important part of life. Still, if a few people can interact with her, her interest in them will perk. She may even begin liking them no matter how strange (or dumb) they are. It will take some time before she actually can trust any "stranger" fully; if they are genuine in their feelings and actions, she will consider her stance toward them.

Shiro is the little sister. She acts cute, and she knows she's cute. She will use her cuteness to her advantage whenever she gets the chance to do so. Sometimes this leads to a very low level of sadism on her part; her cruelty is of the humorous brand, but it still surprises her brother no matter how many times she switches over to it. Hopefully she uses this sparingly, but one can never tell.

AU history: Somewhere in Japan...

When she was only a year old, Shiro was placed in a orphanage. There was no real explanation for it, but that didn't bother her at all. Many visitors came in to see her, to "play" with her. A variety of games were played, each one testing her unnatural brilliance, but all of the games...were boring. Shiro was just being studied. There was no 'fun' element in testing. This went on for two more years before she was introduced to two adults who were supposedly her parents. They brought along a little boy (their son, obviously) who was years older than she was. His name was Sora.

It was in that moment she saw beyond the boy's facade, calling him "empty" within seconds of their meeting. It was a pun on the meaning of his name, but her seriousness made its truth effective. Although shocked at first, the little boy accepted this, showing his true nature in the moments following that comment. He asked if she would like to play a game. From that day forward, Sora added color to her lonely little world.

As brother and sister, Sora and Shiro were inseparable. While he wasn't the best role model, Sora kept her best interests in mind. He introduced her to many different forms of gaming; through board games, video games, and other available technological mediums, Shiro began refining her gifted skill set. But somehow – somewhere, at some point in her short existence – Shiro became jaded with the world. Going to school with children who didn't understand her logic made her a target for bullying. When Sora quit his studies right after graduating from high school, Shiro quit going to school as well. If he didn't have to continue, why should she? She already surpassed the teaching criteria for her grade. It would be pointless to continue learning what she already knew. Their parents tried to cajole them into returning to some form of normalcy, but soon relented when they realized both of their talented children were adamant in staying inside of their room all day and all night playing video games. For Shiro, finding herself within a closed space with her older brother made her feel secure.

The only light that remained was the glow from their television set and the computer – from that thing called the internet. Dial-up was terrible during the day, but faster at night when no calls were being made. Here, Shiro found out she could use the information the internet beheld to her advantage. While learning how to hack, she and her brother also played some of the internet-based games available, working as one team against other anonymous players. With every high score, they left [ ] as their moniker – Blank. It wasn't a full-out obsession to top every score board. They did it until they got bored and moved on to another game.

So that was what Shiro and Sora did – they lived in their room, content with their chosen lifestyle. That was, until another opportunity showed itself. One day, their parents (well, their father) won a trip to beautiful Costa Rica. While he and his wife could have gone there, they both decided that their kids really needed to get out of the house. And what better way to deal with that problem by sending them to Costa Rica instead...?

Third or first person sample: She had no idea what day it was. There was no present concept of day or night. None of that mattered to her.

Shiro was use to having the curtains drawn shut. It was comforting; albeit a few differences in the layout and a lack of access to certain utilities, her brother was able to convert their current living space into something reminiscent of home, enclosing the hotel room in a shroud of darkness.

From the bed, Shiro lay prone. Awake. Red eyes stared directly at the television set, reflecting its static glow. She didn't remember how long they had left it on, since they last played one of the few games they brought for the trip. The light from the set was enough for the siblings to thrive on, something that helped set a familiar atmosphere in a place they had no connection with. Lines of shadows traced across the stack of game consoles, etching them into unrealistic flat shapes of muted color. The cords of each controller wove over and under one another, ending up in a pile of tangled monotony upon the carpeted floor.

It was different to her. But it was also not so different.

The girl slowly sat up, rubbing the feeling of sleep from her eyes. From what she could tell, her brother was still asleep (a rare occurrence, since she was normally the one sleeping in). She knew he would wake up eventually. She just had to figure out what to do until then. Maybe she could play a game. Her stomach said otherwise.

"...Hungry..."

Tiny hands patted her stomach as she leaned forward, peering at the outline of the door that led to the hallway. To the Outside World...
